This extended family session at Harbor Island in Grand Haven is a great example of how I approach family photography when there are multiple generations involved. Harbor Island is one of my favorite locations for Grand Haven family photos because it offers open space, waterfront views, and room for groups to move comfortably without feeling crowded. For larger families, having a location that allows for flexibility is key- and this spot always delivers!
When photographing an extended family, I like to flow from large groups (such as all family, grandparents and grandkids, all the guys, all the girls, etc) to smaller groups (such as individual family units, the couples, individual kids, etc). My goal is to keep things moving smoothly while giving everyone clear direction. I guide positioning, spacing, and transitions so no one is left wondering what to do next.
Extended family sessions are so special and important to schedule because it plays a key role in preserving your family's history! I am always honored to have a part in creating heirloom photographs that will be passed down and remembered for generations.
